Who knows where this pandemic will take us, but already organizations are starting to make big adjustments. We see them starting to slow down while making changes, halting initiatives and laying off employees. That said, we expect to see employers surface again as they settle into new routines of remote work, realigned processes & procedures, and adjusted demand right-sizing.
Rather than allowing your thoughts, actions and emotions to be swayed by the unending bad news from every channel of media and social media, do your best to do what you need to do to stay focused.
Facts help us focus, so start by doing some research into how each industry – and the respective companies – will likely proceed into this unknown future. Look short- and long-term. Ask yourself which industries will do poorly, which will do pretty okay, which will grow, boom or sadly bust? This is important and here are a few thoughts to get the process started…
Industries – Hit Hard: Airlines, Events, Hospitality, Tourism
Industries – Ok: Armed Forces, Government, Utilities
Industries – Hiring: Alcohol, Healthcare, Grocery, Turnaround Consulting Firms
Industries – Booming (Now): Hand Sanitizer, Home Delivery, Paper Tissue, Prepper, Respiratory
It’s a lot easier to hitch our wagons to organizations that are growing than those that have strong head winds and are busy catching knives. Most organizations have eliminated onsite / in-person interviews and either replaced them with phone / video based interviews, or put the entire process on hold. Job search in any economy is an activity-based process, so stay active, be willing to attend Skype or Zoom interviews, and keep turning up stones. This event may just take you on a journey down a road you never saw on your horizon.
